Lyle Lovett Reading Concert reviews
Good performance, weak set list, poor sound
Lyle and his band are outstanding musicians and terrific performers. I most always enjoy their shows. This one was just OK. The sound was problematic. The bass was a touch too loud, Lyle's mic was either defective (cut off the beginning of a lot of his words) or it was too soft. I couldn't hear him sing a lot of the times. I think the drums are too loud as well, and perhaps a sound barrier might be in order.
Musically, I don't think there is a more talented group of musicians anywhere. The bassist, despite being a tad loud, was sensational, as was the steel guitarists and the fiddler. The lead guitarist was OK, the backup singers were so much fun, and the horn section was great when you could hear them. The pianist is clearly masterful, but his solos and lead-ins were pretty much wandering the keyboard and not very cohesive. Kinda frustrating to listen to as I was wondering where he was going.
Lyle's newer songs are pretty weak, and it was unfortunate they took the place of some of his classics. Would love to have heard the Road to Ensenada or some of his other classics. The meat eater song and "Queen of Know" were particularly weak and derivative of his early works.
All in all, it was an OK concert I was glad I went to, but I do wish the sound folks would pay closer attention.
